newScale Announces Support for the Cisco Unified Computing System

Cisco UCS Customers Can Now Use newScale Self-Service and Lifecycle Management Software to Build Private Clouds and IaaS

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 17, 2010 - newScale® Inc., pioneers of the self-service IT storefront for the enterprise, today announced support for the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). Service providers and enterprises can now leverage the newScale FrontOfficeTM  Suite as the self-service portal to their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions and private clouds powered by Cisco UCS.

"Self service is a critical ingredient for successful cloud computing, and newScale is uniquely positioned to help Cisco customers deploy more cloud-like IT services," said Scott Hammond, president and CEO of newScale. "The need for speed and business agility is fueling the demand for cloud services, and IT service providers must respond. This announcement is the culmination of recent joint engagements with Cisco at several service providers and enterprises, and we look forward to continuing to work with Cisco as cloud computing becomes more widespread."

newScale's software provides a Web-based "menu" of standardized service packages and a unified IT storefront for data center services, managing both physical and virtual environments for any hypervisor stack. Users have easy, yet controlled, access to the IT resources they need on-demand - instead of waiting days or weeks. The Cisco UCS platform unifies network, compute, storage access, and virtualization resources in a cohesive system to reduce total cost of ownership, increase business agility, and improve productivity for the next-generation data center.

Cisco UCS enables policy-based management of data center services using service profiles with pre-defined server and connectivity configurations. newScale provides the ability for UCS customers to configure and request service profiles so that UCS server blades can shift workloads as needed, resulting in increased capacity and utilization. In addition, only newScale offers a "just enough console" with rich role-based access control (RBAC), so that Cisco UCS administrators can manage their own resources but don't have visibility into resources they aren't allowed to see.  Customers can also deploy security and compliance workflows for segregation of duties, ensuring that users only have access to what is relevant to them (i.e. only their own compute resources and resource pools).

The newScale announcement today includes the following:

  • Support for Cisco UCS: newScale's commitment to UCS is further demonstration of the company's continued support for multi-vendor, cross-platform data center and cloud infrastructures. By adding UCS support, the newScale self-service portal will also interface with other UCS partners including the Vblock architecture and integrated Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) infrastructure from Cisco, EMC and VMware.
  • Membership in Cisco Developer Network: newScale has joined the Cisco Developer Network, which unites Cisco with third-party developers of hardware and software to deliver business solutions to joint customers. As a new member of the program, newScale shares Cisco's strong commitment to customer service and satisfaction.
  • New Cloud Builder site for Cisco UCS:  newScale introduced a private website aimed at providing Cisco data center teams with resources to build IaaS and private cloud solutions, leveraging newScale's self-service IT storefront software. The Cloud Builder site is open to Cisco employees and is located at: http://ciscoucs.newscale.com.
  • Cloud Operating Model Workshop:  newScale also launched a new program to assist service providers and enterprises in transitioning to a cloud operating model.  Based on best practices from newScale's experience in self-service IT management - along with expertise from Cisco and other data center partners - the Cloud Operating Model Workshop provides an individually tailored step-by-step plan of action for organizations building public, private or hybrid clouds.

Service providers developing IaaS offerings powered by Cisco UCS can now use newScale Service Catalog software to enable self-service provisioning and lifecycle management for their compute-on-demand, network-on-demand and storage-on-demand services.  Enterprise IT organizations can leverage this same powerful combination for their next-generation data center virtualization initiatives and their private or hybrid cloud architecture.

newScale recently introduced a major new release, newScale 9, with self-service ordering and lifecycle management for desktop and data center services across cloud, virtual and physical compute environments.
